Eine kleine Review, die ich zwecks boarduebergreifender Funktionalitaet auf English geschrieben habe.
Better late than never, isn't it? It's all the fault of a heavy cold which reared it's ugly head just before this superb weekend. Well I guess the weekend is also the reason why I layed very very low the last couple of days, hidden in my bed so to speak.
Well what happened? Over the last couple of months the club was almost completely rebuild by some 40 volunteers (!!), only parts of the outer walls remained intact. That much I knew beforehand, we knew also, that there would be a new second floor, i.e. chill-out cafe, and a balkony, so we were quite excited to see the location in all it's new glory.
The first day of the opening-weekend was dedicated to rock and alternative, not much interest in there for my part, but apparantly the club was sold-out! 750 people! Almost twice the capacity it had before the renovation!
Bring it on baby, saturday had to be a blast then with an "ecclectic" line-up from Elektro to DnB, to Breaks and Techno. So we left home loaded with RedBulls and records, sleeping bag, curiosity and party mood, though, as always, later than planned. You know how they are sometimes, those very beloved and beautiful girlfriends.
When we arrived in front of the Spuugh at about 23 o'clock we wondered were all the people were, the parking space was nearly empty, there were no lights, no sound coming out of the building and just a handfull of people hanging around in front of it. The party should have started at nine! We also saw several policecars and firetrucks patrolling the streets. What was going on? Some people on the parking-lot told us then that nobody was allowed to enter the club, because there was a power failure which was already going for over an hour. Yeah right.
When we got closer, we couldn't see any lighting inside or outside, in fact we noticed that the whole block had no light whatsoever. Was it true after all? We were welcomed in emergency-lighting-atmoshpere by some distressed friends who broke us the news right away: "The cable company has a black out!" A large part of Vaals had no electricity since half past nine pm, the organisers had to send all guests away in connection with safety regulations and they had no clue whatsoever when the lights would go back on. They were even planning on cancelling the whole thing if the power did not come back at midnight. Oh damned...
So the staff and fellow DJs just sat there in the dim emergency lighting of the empty club, basically waiting for the things to come. But the mood was not yet really really bad, we still had plenty of cold beers and some catching up to do. We dared not think about the financial loss or maybe even worse the negative publicity. When the dreaded hour drew near, the batteries of some emergency lights slowly exhaled their last breaths and at ten to midnight, nearly all hopes of having a blast of an opening-party faded...
But.....
There must still be a god in heaven who loves His House-Music!!! At the proverbial five to twelve the lights went back on, people jumped up with one big yell, gave each other big group-hugs; within a minute all people were back at their stations, the sound-system was powered up, and the mobile phone companies must have detected a huge peak in their networks, as everyone was calling their friends. Not half an hour later the dancefloor was packed. Yeah, thank you my lord! That was a great relief.
While Dave "Lazy Eye" continued his interrupted elekto-set, the remaining DJs (Lazy Eye, Free and myself) decided to skip the timetable and try some back to back action. Ace, the DnB-DJ from Aachen already left earlier, so you had the perfect "mastertempo" to combine the different styles and judging by the crowd, it was appreciated. Dave played some nice & deep stuff, Free impressed with funkyness & skills and well, I did what I always do.
I was just playing some record on -3 when a friendly sounding voice from behind asked me: "Draaide ge altijd so hard?" ("Legst du immer so hart auf?") Jan van Biesen in da house.
He was definetely in the mood for it and kicked off with some nice deep electro-house-tunes. The people had to get used to his sound for an instant, but they sure loved Tiefschwarz's Ghosttrack and kept on going. The club was nicely filled and the party was boiling. Everything worked out just fine and at about quarter past three, JvB invited me to play some back to back with him. Well, as resident I just knew which buttons to push and so I did.
And then came "el finale grande": Shouting people and 4 DJs having a splendid time behind the decks, changing every other record and clearly enjoying themselves. There it was again, that family feeling that makes the difference between a good party and a special party. Good vibrations all over the place, even when the lights went back on. Not a singel person wanted to leave, Jan van Biesen got them all mad several times. He was going for it, one and all smile, rolling around on the floor(!) and together with Free hyping up the crowd like there was no tomorrow. Mayhem!
When it was all over, we just chilled a bit in the club, looking at the party-aftermath and had a deeply satisfied feeling. Who would have thought some hours ago, that this would be possible. As for the new interieur, well come on over and have look at it yourselves.
Thx to The Lord who definetely likes HouseMusic, Anet, David & Su, Sven, Free, JvB, Dave, Sjon, the whole crew and everyone else I forgot for support and making this happen! C U next time.
Pictures will follow shortly
